Besides lighthouses and fog-horn other local attractions in Suurupi are coastal artillery batteries dating back to World War I. Estonia was as part of czarist Russia then and Russia started constructions of a grand Emperor Peter the Great Naval Fortress that spread all along the coasts of NW Estonia.
Suurupi, according to original plans was supposed to have three coastal artillery batteries and two searchlights for nocturnal battles. Two narrow gauge railway lines (750 mm) were built to connect Suurupi with Tallinn.
